Future Lawyer Confident About Pursuing Her Passion Thanks to UHLC Scholarship and Support

When asked about her impressions of the University of Houston Law Center after her first semester, Kaitlin Cavazos (J.D. Candidate ’27) starts with her newfound friendships.
“I have a group of women that I met in the first week of orientation, and we have been inseparable ever since. They even came to my wedding in December,” Cavazos shares.
This answer speaks to how much Cavazos values personal connections. Her passion for connecting with and assisting others is what first inspired her to pursue a law degree. After receiving a scholarship as an undergraduate at Texas A&M, she sought to deepen her understanding of philanthropy, specifically why donors decide to give back, and she became an ambassador for the Texas A&M Foundation.
“I got to work firsthand with donors and say thank you and hear their stories, which was one of the most fulfilling things that I've ever done. Just being able to build those relationships, hear about their A&M experiences and be a part of something bigger than myself was very rewarding.”
The relationships she developed with donors sparked her interest in the processes behind charitable gifts.
“I worked at the A&M Foundation and looked at estates and wills and how charitable giving can fit into that. I realized that this work fits with my brain and my interests. This work is a way that I can use my skills and my talents to do good in the world, and that means a lot to me.”

Cavazos was admitted to the UH Law Center and received the Gregory C. and Leigh Ann King Endowed Student Scholarship, a recruitment scholarship aimed at attracting promising students to UHLC. A recruitment scholarship like the King Scholarship is a shining example of the University of Houston's push to prepare and empower the next generation of the Houston workforce as well as elevate the University's reputation.
This scholarship promises Cavazos more than freedom from financial stress.
“It allowed me to know that when I’m at the end of my three years, I can choose a job that I really want and really care about and am really passionate about,” Cavazos explains.
Her reasons for choosing UH extended beyond financial aid. While making her decision, she found UH students to be exceptionally welcoming and supportive.
“I really found the culture to be one of generosity. Students ahead of me in their law school journey were so helpful and ready to help and willing to share their experience.” She has heard that this tradition of lending a helping hand continues in the UHLC alumni community.
"Receiving a scholarship, I feel like I’m part of the legacy of UH as a student. Somebody believed in me enough, and in the legacy of UH enough, to invest in my future. That means a lot to me."
Cavazos looks to the future with confidence, knowing that the University of Houston Law Center and the King Scholarship have provided her with a solid foundation to take her passion to the next level.
