Swimming to New Heights

Attending the University of Houston

Coming from the competitive swimming world at UH, I am used to balancing a heavy workload. The accelerated nursing program at UH seemed right for me and my goals.

It enabled me to remain near to my family while also engaging in an accelerated program in under a year, which is rare to find. Additionally, I have a long family history of Cougar alumni, and I wanted to continue that legacy. By attending UH, I believe that I will have the best opportunity to receive a strong education that will allow me to be the best nurse I can be.

Benefits of Receiving a Scholarship

I was granted the Re Bob and Vivian Smith Foundation Scholarship. This generous scholarship will allow me to continue my education at UH to become a registered nurse. I am paying for my education; this scholarship helps to offset fees associated with the program.

UH Experience

Every time I can go to the hospital for my clinical shift, I have the most meaningful experiences with patients. I not only provide and assist in their care but I am able to talk to them and build a meaningful rapport.

I find that talking to patients allows them to be open about their feelings, as well as share personal stories that provide them comfort. I can act as a "listening ear" for anything they wish to say, and it is very therapeutic for them.

Career Goals

After becoming a R.N., I plan to get 2-3 years of experience as a practicing nurse and then apply to the nurse practitioner program to continue my education and patient practice. I hope to achieve a rewarding career at one of the top hospitals in Houston.

My goals as a nurse are to be able to provide a calming presence and joyful spirit to my patients. I want to demonstrate to my patients my genuine care for them and their families as well as impact them outside of their illnesses.

Philanthropy

I hope one day to provide scholarships to the UH swim team and the UH College of Nursing.
